Building Titanic II

Just because the first one sank spectacularly after hitting an iceberg, it doesn't mean that it's a bad idea. After all, isn't second time's often the charm?

Here's the plan to build Titanic II:

An Australian mining magnate has commissioned a Chinese shipyard to build a replica of the ill-fated Titanic, complete in every detail but equipped with modern technology to prevent a repeat of the original's fateful maiden voyage 100 years ago.

Clive Palmer, a Queensland mining billionaire with strong links to China, told Australian media that he had signed a memorandum of understanding with CSC Jinling Shipyard to build the ship.

He said construction of the luxury cruise ship would begin next year and the ship would be ready to sail in 2016."It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic but of course it will have state-of-the-art 21st century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems," he said in a statement.

I remain puzzled by the fame of the Titanic. Sure the loss of life was huge, sure it had been described as unsinkable, but ship wrecks were still relatively commonplace back then. Indeed the primary reason it was thought necessary to describe it as unsinkable was because of the frequency of wrecks and the resultant fear many still had of sailing.

I often wonder if the wreck attracted so much attention because for once the crew acted like gentlemen and didn't trample the passengers in the rush for the boats.

Don't want to worry you then Craig, but the Chinese build more ships than anybody else. If you're right there must be an awful lot of wrecks we're not hearing about.

He's one of those people who is so rich he gets called "eccentric" rather than the more truthful "raving loony". He also just announced that he's running for election in my district, just because he doesn't like the incumbent.

Like @anothermichael said, it'll all probably amount to nothing.

he probably won't build this ship, Clive Palmer has a long history of making stupid statements then backtracking. earlier in the year he claimed the CIA were funding green groups to protest against his mining interest , then later claimed he was only joking
