Fifty Shades of Divorce

If only more people had picked up Fifty Shades of Chicken instead of Fifty Shades of Grey, it would have saved a few marriages. Well, at least one to be sure.

The wife's solicitor, Amanda McAlister, one of Britain's leading matrimonial lawyers, says she believes it's the first time the book has triggered a divorce. Ms McAlister said: "The woman had been reading the book and wanted to spice up her love life. She thought their sex life had hit a rut - he never remembered Valentine's Day and he never complimented her on her appearance. So she bought sexy underwear in an attempt to get her husband more involved. She said, "Let's make things more interesting".

The problem is that the book includes sexual bondage and S&M - something the husband was not at all down for. He refused her advances so she filed for divorce, citing "his lack of adventure is evidence of unreasonable behavior - one of five grounds for divorce under family law." He isn't contesting the filing.

Part of me is like suck it up man, being forced to have sex with your wife can't be all that bad. Then again, another part of me thinks divorcing your husband because he won't do S&M with you is kind of weaksauce. Thoughts people?

Being forced to have sex with anyone is wrong wrong wrong. That's rape, not sex. Doesn't matter what gender or if they are married or in a relationship.

Some people are naturals at it and some people can be brought to it, but neither work if one person isn't sure of their consent or comfort. But from the source link you provided and the description in it, it sounded like he wasn't even as enthusiastic for sex as she was, and that's a whole different problem that whips and chains won't fix.

It sounded like an excuse to leave him to me. I agree with the idea that BDSM probably loses its purpose if both parties aren't fully consensual.

BDSM is not something you enter into lightly nor divorce someone because they're not "adventurous" enough. The whole point of engaging in BDSM is that it's a consensual power play, and if both partners aren't up to it, it ends up being dangerous. Nor is that book a good representation of a BDSM relationship - neither of those characters belonged in relationships of any sort.

If she wanted to divorce him, fine. It sounds like they had enough issues to promote grounds for one. But don't do it because someone won't tie you up or beat you. There are rules, and it's a type of relationship built out of an extreme amount of trust that most people I know don't even begin to fathom.
