Hotel Conditions in Sochi

Two days to go before the Olympics begin, and journalists are settling in Sochi, Russia. Or trying to. Nine hotels were built for the media, but only six of them are completed. And even those are running into “opening day problems.” The elevator in one hotel gave out, while the heat was missing in another. CNN booked 11 rooms and only one was ready when the crew arrived. Just how many journalists are trying to sleep in that one room? If CNN planned for their employees to share rooms, that could be a couple dozen! Meanwhile, the correspondents are taking to Twitter to tell us what their accommodations are like. You have to wonder if the same problems are occurring at the Olympic Village and in the tourist hotels. -via Digg

I have read about US athletes in other Olympics who stayed in hotel rooms, sometimes with their families, so it's not required. Your idea sounds fascinating, but transportation and translation might be a problem. Transportation is often a problem even for Olympic Village athletes.

I'm assuming, from your smart-ass, and somewhat cryptic comment, that you assume I haven't been paying attention to what has been happening at the Olympic site. I am not alone in being surprised at the state of the infrastructure. Following the links included in the story, or watching a newscast on the event, will inform you that most of the athletes, and newspeople, have been appalled at the conditions they are subjected to, over there.

Every time I see a post about Sochi, I am more curious how that city won the right to host the Olympics. Their entire infrastructure appears to be antiquated, or poorly maintained. Something seems crooked about their winning bid. They seem totally unprepared to cope with such an large influx of people. In fact, they seem unprepared to support their native population.
