CGP Grey Explains Net Neutrality

(YouTube link)

As it is now, I pay $45 a month for internet access that my cable company advertises for $15. Why? Because if I took the cheaper deal, I wouldn’t be able to screen dozen of videos every day to judge which are the best to post to Neatorama. If the concept of net neutrality were done away with, you might not even be able to access Neatorama, because we aren’t a large media corporation able to grease the provider’s palms. And if we were, you’d probably have to pay to cover those expenses.

In this video, CGP Grey compares the internet to utilities and roads, and what would happen if they were treated the way some providers want to refashion the internet. The U.S. already has slower broadband than most of the rest of the developed world, at higher prices. It could get worse if we don’t speak out now. -via Viral Viral Videos

My ISP blocks access to outbound port 25 (Sending E-Mail) except to their servers. It also blocks inbound port 80 (Web Pages). It monitors certain data usage and contacts clients if they go to "no-no" sites (File Sharing). They "get away with it" because it is in our contract.

The WiFi at my favorite lunch place blocks anything except Web Pages and E-Mail.

While I support Net Neutrality, I wonder what we should do about this sort of filtering.

On the other side, I'm paying a rather slow but secure SDSL solution for my business. I'm rather jealous that my pipes are shared by TV over internet, youporntube watchers and most other people who are not creating value or jobs. The fiber was just installed in my town, but all I see is a discrepancy between my speed and the regular people's speed, and the price we pay.
Yes I understand that I have a warranty of service, a slow but constant and fair upload speed. But couldn't that be faster without the freeloaders around me?
So yes, I'd like a little bit of broadband to be not neutral.
Even if it's slowing my Neatorama browsing @ home.

Business vs Pleasure?
